What is embroidered patch embroidery?

Custom embroidered patches are stitched on twill backing fabric and finished with either a merrowed (overlocked thread) edge or a hot-cut (clean laser-cut) edge. They can be sewn onto any garment, attached with iron-on adhesive backing, or fastened with Velcro hook-and-loop for swappable applications (most commonly tactical and uniform use). Patches are the right call when you want to put the same design on many different garments without re-embroidering each one, when you want a heavier, more visible logo than direct embroidery, or when you want to be able to remove the design later. Common customers include fire departments (unit identifiers), Boy Scouts and other youth organizations (rank and event patches), bikers (MC colors and rockers), military veterans (unit and deployment patches), corporate event organizers (sponsor patches), and retail brands (hat brands and high-end streetwear).

Best garments for embroidered patch embroidery

Patches go on virtually anything that can accept either sewing, iron-on adhesive, or a Velcro mating surface. The most common applications are jackets (biker, work, varsity), hats (front and side panel patches), backpacks, vests (tactical, MC, scouting), and uniforms (military, public safety). Iron-on backing works on cotton, polyester, and most cotton-poly blends — it does NOT work on nylon (the heat melts the fabric), waterproofed soft shell, or any garment with a printed plastisol underlayer (the patch and the print fight each other under the iron). For nylon and tech fabrics, choose sew-on or Velcro backing.

How to prepare artwork for embroidered patch embroidery

Patch artwork follows the same vector-preferred rules as direct embroidery. The big difference is that patches have a defined edge — your design needs to either fit inside a clean shape (circle, square, shield) or be designed so the edge follows the outline of the design itself (a hot-cut patch shaped exactly like your logo). For merrowed edges, the design has to be a simple geometric shape because the merrow machine can only sew straight or curved overlocked edges. For complex shapes, you need a hot-cut edge — a more premium finish that costs $1-2 more per patch but lets you have a patch in any silhouette. Send us a vector file plus a clear spec for which finish you want.

Custom Embroidered Patches pricing details

2-inch patches start at $12 each, 3.5-inch at $16, 5-inch at $22 — all in single quantity. Volume pricing drops dramatically: a 100-piece order of 3.5-inch patches runs about $4 each, and a 500-piece order under $3. Iron-on backing adds $2 per patch, Velcro backing adds $3. Hot-cut (custom shape) edges add $1-2 depending on size. Digitizing is $125 one-time per design. Note that patches are produced off-site through our patch-manufacturing partner, which is why turnaround is 7-10 business days rather than our standard in-house turnaround.

Custom Embroidered Patches FAQ

What is the difference between merrowed and hot-cut edges?
Merrowed edges are the classic look — a thread-overlocked border around the patch. Hot-cut edges are laser-cut for a cleaner, more modern look and let the patch be shaped to any silhouette. Merrowed is standard; hot-cut adds $1-2 per patch.
Can I put an iron-on patch on a nylon jacket?
No — the iron-on adhesive requires high heat that will melt nylon and other tech fabrics. For nylon, soft-shell, and any tech jacket, choose sew-on or Velcro backing.
What is Velcro backing for?
Velcro backing has the hook side of a hook-and-loop fastener pre-attached. You sew the loop side onto your garment once, then any Velcro-backed patch can be attached and removed at will. Used heavily by tactical operators, military, and EMS who swap unit patches between deployments.
How long do patches take?
7-10 business days for production turnaround because patches are produced through our off-site partner. Rush production (3-5 days) is available for an additional fee.
Can I order just one custom patch?
Yes, single-patch orders are welcome. The economics work much better at 24+ pieces, but if you need a one-off memorial patch or a single sample, we can run it.
